Square within a SquareAbstracts
“Square within a Square” is a comprehensive series on which Steffa Reis began to work as of 1990. Precisely drawn squares are contrasted with pattern-like forms and patches of color, that overlap the straight lines. Often, the paint is applied thickly, or directly from the tube, creating a relief-like surface. As such, the materiality of the paint is emphasized and constitutes a central component of the work.
