Golan ‘73Thematic Series

When the Yom Kippur War erupted in October 1973 and caught Israel unawares, the Reis family was living in Safed, Upper Galilee. The Sieff Hospital, where Steffa’s husband was head of Orthopedics and Traumatology, was closest to the front lines, and so received the injured and fallen from the northern borders. Steffa worked as a volunteer in the hospital, tending to the wounded and their families.

In the “Golan ‘73” series (1973-1974), she gives expression to her personal, traumatic encounter with the violence of war and its young victims, and to descriptions of the intense war zone scenes on the Golan Heights. In the works that combine semi-figurative and abstract elements, schematic figures can be discerned on tanks, or carrying out various actions. The compositions are characterized by expressive, gestural brushstrokes, and emotive, often symbolic colors.
