While visiting the Greek islands in 1998, Steffa Reis’ attention was drawn to the remnants of ancient Greek temples projected against a relentless blue sky – sights that became an inspiration for the “Cyphers” series.
The works present rectilinear structures, floating in space, some of them against the firmament. These structures, reminiscent of architectural drawings, echo the quintessential characteristics of ancient Greek architecture – simplicity, symmetry, harmony and sophistication.

Steffa Reis reflected that the same relentless blue sky is forever uncaring and oblivious to the human aspirations, trials and tragedies taking place below.
